Ogunquit, Maine

A coworker mentioned a great spot for a walk: just an hour and a quarter drive away is a small town in Maine called Ogunquit. There you can walk a 1.4 mile footpath along the sea coast to the nearby, even smaller town of Perkins Cove. It's off season, do parking is plentiful and the path isn't too crowded. This sounded like a perfect afternoon getaway, so off I went.

The minute I crossed into Maine, I could tell I was in a new place. According to the signage, Maine is known as "vacation land" (who knew?) and "watch for moose on the road" signs became plentiful. I saw a sign forbidding plants on your boat (?) and another advertising a chicken shoot, whatever that is.

The weirdest part may have been all of the people laying out on the beach, when the wind chill brought the temp to 32 degrees, all bundled up but still laying out on the sand, as if it were June. One person was even sound asleep.

I took a lovely little walk, took lots of pictures, and found a shop that was open despite the off season that sold souvenir magnets. I even managed to avoid the amazing local bakery, lest I completely obliterate my diet.

And I have now found not only a neat place to walk when I need a change of scenery, but a nice destination to bring friends and family when they come for a visit.
